Once or twice a year my family visits a wonderful old summerhouse on a little island connected to Osterville on Cape Cod. The house has been in my father’s side of the family since the 1920s and has seen many comings and goings. While gathered there with cousins and a great aunt one August, we were just finishing dinner when my cousin’s little son noticed the sky. We rushed down to the little beach to witness the most dramatic sunset I’ve seen on the Cape. I knew it needed to be turned into a painting.
This second print of the painting is now living in a wonderful old home of an old friend from my hometown growing up. Sharon bought this in the winter last year and it’s warmed her home this winter. I think the white and dark matte framing brings out the rich darks and reds and yellows in the sky and water. What do you think? To give you a better sense of how this piece lives in the room, here is a wider-angle picture –
